About The Event
Join NEON staff and facilitators as we explore and address the health disparities faced by LGBTQ+ members of our communities. According to the U.S. Census, over 62 million people, or roughly one in five American residents, live in rural areas. National surveys show that between 3% and 5% of the rural population identifies as LGBTQ+. LGBTQ+ cultural competency training is highly recommended for staff working in health care and social service settings across the United States including rural America. Indeed, the Department of Health and Human Services encourages new and existing human services programs to include LGBTQ cultural competency training, as the lack of culturally aware providers is a significant barrier to quality health care and social services for many LGBTQ+ people.
In this training session you will increase your knowledge of LGBTQ+ health and social service needs, learn about existing barriers to services, and understand the risk factors that contribute to LGBTQ+ health disparities. We will also explore how to increase LGBTQ+ affirming attitudes and behaviors, therefore creating a safe and welcoming environment in your organization. This training will be delivered by diverse members of the NEON staff and facilitators with extensive experience in working with, and some being a part of, the LGBTQ+ fabric of rural Oregon.
