About The Event

Traditionally, health care and human service settings operate on a formal basis within the office or care setting.  As a result, professional boundaries and roles are relatively clear and well-defined. However, CHW work is often performed outside the office or in the consumers’ homes in a highly variable and unpredictable environment, sometimes requiring decisions to be made on the fly and/or without direct supervision. This also means that CHWs develop a closer helping relationship with community members that is in some ways analogous to the counseling helping relationship.

This course will help supervisors build the unique skills required to support CHWs and frontline staff, including aiding in setting appropriate boundaries and staying within the scope of work. Enhance your knowledge and related skills and techniques of trauma-informed supervision, as well as knowing how to use a relational model for coaching.

Audience and scope:  Individuals in healthcare and human service settings who supervise Community Health Workers and other frontline staff.

Objectives:  Participants will be able to:

  • Define unique characteristics of a CHW’s role
  • Identify the qualities and skills of an effective CHW supervisor
  • Explain the concept of “trauma informed supervision” and assess their own practice in terms of TI supervision
  • Use active listening skills (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening and summarizing) in supervision with CHWs
  • Will be able to make use of the supervision framework and tool necessary to create an effective supervision structure.
